Promises Kept is breathing down Dunkel’s neck, while Aberfeldie Boy and A Samurai Mind lurk with hidden potential. Who will emerge from the pack?

  • Did Kelly Slate Retire?

Surfing icon Kelly Slater, widely considered the greatest of all time, has sparked retirement rumors after failing to qualify for the remainder of the World Surf League season. The 52-year-old American, boasting an unmatched 11 world titles, lost to compatriot Griffin Colapinto at the Margaret River Pro. This defeat, Slater conceded to the World Surf League, “feels like the end.”

“That’s just the way it goes,” Slater acknowledged. “Everything eventually comes to a close. If you don’t adapt, you can’t keep up, and frankly, I haven’t had the unwavering dedication everyone else on tour possesses these days.”

Slater’s reign of dominance began in 1992 when, at a mere 20 years old, he became the youngest ever men’s world champion, a record he still holds today. Nearly two decades later, he defied expectations once more by securing his 11th title, etching his name as the oldest champion as well. Throughout this period, Slater was surfing’s undisputed global ambassador, a role that catapulted him to mainstream fame. Unlike most surfers, he garnered major endorsements, a memorable appearance on “Baywatch” (alongside then-girlfriend Pamela Anderson), and even his own video game, “Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer.”

“When I’m out there on a wave,” Slater once said, “it’s like time slows down. You become incredibly aware of everything – the wave’s form, the timing, positioning yourself perfectly within the barrel. It takes every ounce of mental focus to execute it flawlessly.”

In recent years, however, injuries have hampered Slater, and whispers of retirement have grown louder. While this week’s results eliminate him from the tour for the remainder of 2024, the surfing legend hinted at potentially applying for a wildcard spot in Fiji come August.

“It’s been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable memories,” Slater shared at Margaret River. “So much emotion, so much dedication poured into this sport – it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows, but undeniably some of the best times of my life.”

While his illustrious surfing career appears to be nearing its conclusion, Slater remains optimistic. “This feels like the start of something new,” he concluded, “the beginning of the rest of my life.”

    5. Will Netflix Knock Out Traditional Sports? The Upcoming Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Fight and the Future of Live Sports Streaming

Netflix has a reputation for disrupting the entertainment industry, and now they’re setting their sights on live sports. Their latest announcement? A head-turning boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and boxing legend Mike Tyson, streaming live on July 20th.

This isn’t Netflix’s first swing at live sports. They’ve experimented with events like the Netflix Cup (think Formula 1 vs. Golf) and The Netflix Slam (a tennis showdown). But this fight against the backdrop of a changing sports media landscape raises interesting questions.

The move towards live sports coincides with Netflix’s foray into advertising. However, the Paul vs. Tyson matchup adds another layer of intrigue. Netflix’s docuseries “Untold” featured Paul’s boxing journey, with Tyson himself offering praise for the young fighter’s dedication. Paul even boasts a win over former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of a Tyson fight in 2020.

Tyson, the self-proclaimed “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time), seems to relish the challenge. “He’s grown significantly,” Tyson said of Paul. “It will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.”

While Netflix is known for taking risks, this fight carries some weight. Established channels like HBO and Showtime have largely stepped away from boxing programming. Will viewers flock to Netflix for this unconventional matchup?

This isn’t just about boxing. Netflix is exploring other live formats, including a stand-up special with Chris Rock and a reunion episode for their reality show “Love Is Blind” (though not without some technical hiccups).

Only time will tell if Netflix can score a knockout with live boxing and other ventures. One thing’s for sure, this fight and Netflix’s broader live content strategy promise an exciting battle against traditional sports networks. Will Netflix emerge victorious, or will it be a TKO for the established players? Mark your calendars for July 20th and tune in to find out!
