The spring is officially underway, and Saturday delivers the first genuine marker of the season with Group 1 racing returning to Royal Randwick.
We’ll be covering Races 7-10 at Randwick, headlined by the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400m. It’s a weight-for-age contest that brings together some of the country’s best middle-distance performers as they launch their spring campaigns, as well as the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes for the three-year-old fillies and the Group 3 County Quality.
We’ll also preview Races 6-9 at Sandown Hillside, where the Group 3 Carlyon Stakes over 1000m headlines a card with plenty of depth. As is typical of this stage of the season, there’s a compelling mix of horses resuming from a spell and others carrying strong winter form forward.
It shapes as a fascinating day for punters. Both metropolitan cards are packed with first-up runners, which makes fresh form and race fitness the key variables. We’ve done the form and narrowed down our best bets and value plays across both meetings.
🏇 Randwick R7 1200m – Group 2 Hkjc World Pool Silver Shadow Stakes
📝 Race Overview: A Group 2 test for the three-year-old fillies, and a race defined by the fact that almost every runner is resuming. With so few having had a recent hitout, fresh ability and natural speed should count for plenty over the 1200m.
🔥 Best Bet: CHERRY BOMSHELL 💰 Odds: ~$6 ⚡ The highest-rated runner in the field and the one with the most compelling recent record, having won her last three starts before going to the paddock. She scored over this course and distance at her most recent outing and returns with just four starts behind her, so there should be improvement still to come.
💎 Best Value: BANGKOK HOTTIE 💰 Odds: ~$9.50 💥 The one clear point of difference in the race — she’s second-up, having finished third over 1100m at Randwick a fortnight ago, while most of her rivals are first-up. That fitness edge counts for something in a Group 2, and the step up to 1200m looks within her range.
🏇 Randwick R8 1200m – Group 3 Hyland Race Colours Show County Quality
📝 Race Overview: An open sprint where the market has struggled to separate them, with six runners inside single figures. A number of seasoned sprinters resume here, so the ones who handle first-up assignments should be the ones fighting out the finish.
🔥 Best Bet: SOOTHSAYER 💰 Odds: ~$5.50 ⚡ Won his past two starts before a nine-week let-up and boasts a 37% career win strike rate from 19 starts. He returns to a Group 3 with genuine momentum behind him, and the good barrier should allow him to settle where he wants.
💎 Best Value: ENRICHED 💰 Odds: ~$7 💥 Only 13 starts for three wins and four placings — a lightly raced profile for a five-year-old, with prizemoney that reflects the class of company he’s been keeping. He resumes here with the tongue tie coming off for the first time.
🏇 Randwick R9 1400m – Group 1 Winx Stakes
📝 Race Overview: The feature of the day, and the first Group 1 of the season. A weight-for-age contest where all but one of the field resumes from a spell, so this becomes a question of which of these elite gallopers is best placed to perform fresh. Chris Waller has stacked the race.
🔥 Best Bet: AUTUMN GLOW 💰 Odds: ~$1.90 ⚡ Eleven wins from her 12 career starts speaks for itself, and she’s the highest-rated runner in the race. She resumes here off a third placing at her most recent start, and James McDonald takes the ride. There’s very little to fault.
💎 Best Value: BEIWACHT 💰 Odds: ~$18 💥 Won over this exact course and distance at his most recent outing, which is the most relevant form line in the race for a horse at these odds. Like nearly all of his rivals he resumes here, but a proven Randwick 1400m winner at double-figure odds is worth an each-way interest.
🏇 Randwick R10 1200m – Tajima Wagyu Handicap (Bm78)
📝 Race Overview: A competitive benchmark sprint to close a big card, and unlike the earlier races this one is full of horses with recent form. Several come out of Randwick and Rosehill sprints in the past fortnight, which makes the form lines easy enough to line up.
🔥 Best Bet: COLUMBIA BLUE 💰 Odds: ~$4.80 ⚡ Four wins and three placings from just nine starts — an 89% place strike rate that stands out in this grade. He finished third over this course and distance a fortnight ago and is now fourth-up, with Nash Rawiller retaining the ride. The 60.5kg is the only query.
💎 Best Value: ANNIE’S ROSE 💰 Odds: ~$12 💥 Won first-up at Rosehill over 1100m three weeks ago and now steps out second-up, which is often when these mares are at their best. The rise to 1200m looks manageable on the back of that effort.
🏇 Sandown Hillside R6 1000m – Drummond Golf Handicap (Bm74)
📝 Race Overview: A big field of fillies and mares over the sprint trip, and with a capacity nominations list there’s plenty of speed engaged. Barriers and early positioning look likely to matter more than usual over 1000m.
🔥 Best Bet: SALUTED 💰 Odds: ~$6.50 ⚡ The highest-rated runner in the race and a last-start winner over 1000m at Sandown Lakeside four weeks ago. Four wins and three placings from 11 starts is a strong record for this grade, and the apprentice claim eases the topweight to a more manageable 59kg.
💎 Best Value: MRS ARCHIBALD 💰 Odds: ~$26 💥 Bounced back to win at Bendigo just one week ago and backs up quickly here. She’s a mare with five wins and five seconds from 26 starts who has shown she can find form in bursts, and at this price she’s worth including.
🏇 Sandown Hillside R7 1000m – Group 3 Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes
📝 Race Overview: The feature at Sandown and a genuine sprint test over the straight-ish 1000m. A number of these come out of the same recent Caulfield Heath sprint, which gives the race a solid form reference point.
🔥 Best Bet: CAVALRY GIRL 💰 Odds: ~$3.30 ⚡ In excellent order, having won her most recent start over 1000m at Caulfield Heath a fortnight ago, and she’s won or placed at three of her past four. Barrier one is a significant advantage over this trip and Craig Williams stays aboard.
💎 Best Value: OLE DANCER 💰 Odds: ~$10 💥 A high-class mare on ratings with three wins and three placings from just eight starts, and prizemoney well beyond most of her rivals here. She resumes with a tongue tie applied for the first time, and if she brings her best fresh she’s better than these odds suggest.
🏇 Sandown Hillside R8 1300m – Dr Sheahan Plate (Bm88)
📝 Race Overview: A fascinating small-field benchmark race featuring two runners with remarkable records. Something has to give between the unbeaten mare and the lightly raced filly at the top of the market.
🔥 Best Bet: TENNESSEE BOUND 💰 Odds: ~$2.70 ⚡ Six starts, six wins — an unbeaten record that she brings into this off a win over 1100m at Caulfield four weeks ago. The apprentice claim brings her to 56.5kg and she steps up to 1300m with nothing to prove at shorter.
💎 Best Value: ROMANTIC ENCOUNTER 💰 Odds: ~$19 💥 Has been gelded since his last appearance and returns from a lengthy break, which is a meaningful change for a horse whose form tailed off across his most recent preparation. He won early in his career, and at 54kg he’s well placed if the freshen-up has done its work.
🏇 Sandown Hillside R9 1600m – Ladbrokes Hosted Pots Handicap (Bm84)
📝 Race Overview: A big field over the mile to close the Sandown program, and a genuinely competitive benchmark affair. Several of these have come through the same recent Flemington and Caulfield Heath races, and with a large field the run in transit could prove decisive.
🔥 Best Bet: STAY SILENT 💰 Odds: ~$7.50 ⚡ Has won his past two starts, the most recent over 1500m at Caulfield Heath a fortnight ago, and steps up to the mile in career-best form. The apprentice claim brings him to 55kg, which is a genuine help in a race of this depth.
💎 Best Value: FARHH FLUNG 💰 Odds: ~$20 💥 Ran an excellent second over 1620m at Flemington three weeks ago, so the trip and the recent form both stack up. He’s a veteran with 13 career seconds from 46 starts, and while wins have been harder to come by, he’s clearly competitive at this level.
