Netflix has a reputation for disrupting the entertainment industry, and now they’re setting their sights on live sports. Their latest announcement? A head-turning boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and boxing legend Mike Tyson, streaming live on July 20th.
This isn’t Netflix’s first swing at live sports. They’ve experimented with events like the Netflix Cup (think Formula 1 vs. Golf) and The Netflix Slam (a tennis showdown). But this fight against the backdrop of a changing sports media landscape raises interesting questions.
The move towards live sports coincides with Netflix’s foray into advertising. However, the Paul vs. Tyson matchup adds another layer of intrigue. Netflix’s docuseries “Untold” featured Paul’s boxing journey, with Tyson himself offering praise for the young fighter’s dedication. Paul even boasts a win over former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of a Tyson fight in 2020.
Tyson, the self-proclaimed “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time), seems to relish the challenge. “He’s grown significantly,” Tyson said of Paul. “It will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.”
