The spring carnival is building towards its peak and this weekend delivers a quality double-header across two days. With five winners from eight races last week, we’re in strong form heading into what shapes as one of the best weekends of the season so far.
On Saturday, Rosehill Gardens hosts a blockbuster card headlined by the Group 1 Yulong Golden Rose, the premier three-year-old race of the early spring. We’ll be covering Races 7 through 10, which also feature the Group 2 Golden Pendant for the mares and the Group 2 Shannon Stakes.
Sunday takes us to The Valley @ Caulfield for a terrific nine-race program featuring the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, where some of the country’s best sprinters clash. The Group 2 Stutt Stakes and Stocks Stakes round out a strong supporting card across Races 6 to 9.

🏇 Rosehill R7 1400m – Group 2 Racingandsports.Com.Au Golden Pendant
📝 Race Overview: A quality Group 2 for the fillies and mares over 1400m, with most of the field resuming or second-up in their spring campaigns. The small field of nine should produce a genuinely run race, and the class runners look hard to beat if they’re close to their best.
🔥 Best Bet: LAZZURA 💰 Odds: ~$2.30 ⚡ The clear top-rater on 115 and a deserved favourite. She’s second-up here after a solid third over 1200m at Rosehill two weeks ago, and her form string shows she won twice during her last preparation before spelling. Six wins from eighteen starts with $1.9 million in earnings tells you this mare performs at the top level, and the step to 1400m second-up looks ideal. James McDonald in the saddle adds further confidence.
💎 Best Value: GANGSTA GRANNY 💰 Odds: ~$5.50 💥 The numbers don’t lie with this mare — five wins and five thirds from just fourteen starts gives her a remarkable 93% place strike rate. She’s third-up after running second over 1200m at Rosehill last time, and she placed in both runs during her last preparation at this stage. At $5.50 she shapes as the each-way standout in the race.
🏇 Rosehill R8 1400m – Group 1 Yulong Golden Rose
📝 Race Overview: The feature of the weekend and one of the great three-year-old races of the spring. A field of thirteen goes around in this Group 1 over 1400m, with several lightly raced types stepping up in class. The Golden Rose often identifies the generation’s star, and there are a few exciting colts in this year’s edition.
🔥 Best Bet: GUEST HOUSE 💰 Odds: ~$2.50 ⚡ Three wins from five career starts and already a $3.5 million earner — the resume speaks for itself. He won impressively first-up over 1100m at Rosehill four weeks ago and his only other second-up run produced a strong win. His form string of 1231×1 shows a horse who has barely put a foot wrong, and at 1400m he should be even better suited. The one to beat.
💎 Best Value: WARWOVEN 💰 Odds: ~$5 💥 Won well last start in an eleven-runner field at Rosehill over 1200m and now steps up to 1400m third-up. Four wins from seven starts at a 57% strike rate, and he draws barrier one which should allow Rachel King to find a lovely position early. He’s honest and progressive, and at $5 he offers genuine value in a Group 1 field.
🏇 Rosehill R9 1500m – Group 2 Hkjc World Pool Shannon Stakes
📝 Race Overview: A strong Group 2 for the older horses over 1500m. The field includes several proven weight-for-age performers and the race should be run at a genuine tempo with a few on-pace runners engaged. Fitness and class will be the deciding factors.
🔥 Best Bet: SKYHOOK 💰 Odds: ~$1.90 ⚡ It’s a short price, but Skyhook is a deserving favourite after his dominant last-start win in a thirteen-runner field at Rosehill over 1300m. He’s second-up now and steps up to 1500m, which should suit a horse with five wins from fourteen starts and over a million dollars in earnings. Still only a four-year-old on the improve, and Kerrin McEvoy keeps the ride.
💎 Best Value: MAGNATEAR 💰 Odds: ~$9 💥 The ultimate each-way horse — seven wins and ten placings from thirty-two career starts tells you he turns up every time. He’s second-up after running second in a thirteen-runner field at Rosehill over 1300m last start, and he gets into this race on just 55kg with barrier one. At $9 he looks excellent value to be in the finish again.
🏇 Rosehill R10 1100m – Tab Handicap (Bm78)
📝 Race Overview: A competitive BM78 sprint to close the Rosehill card. Several runners are resuming from a spell and the race has been weakened by scratchings, but there’s still some nice form on show. Horses who can handle the 1100m dash and hold a forward position should be well suited.
🔥 Best Bet: BANJORA 💰 Odds: ~$4.20 ⚡ Three wins from just five career starts at a 60% strike rate — that’s an outstanding record. He resumes here after a 26-week break, but his form string shows he’s won first-up before and handles the fresh assignment. His previous preparation produced a win and a third from just two runs, and Andrew Bullock takes the ride from barrier twelve. The lightly raced profile suggests there’s upside to come.
💎 Best Value: KIMBERLEY SECRETS 💰 Odds: ~$7.50 💥 Ridiculously consistent — she’s run second in four of her past five starts and her last-ten form reads 22212×2522. Fourth-up now and hardened by three runs this preparation, she gets barrier one and an apprentice’s claim that brings her weight down from 59kg to 56kg. At $7.50 she’s the value runner in a race where she’s been knocking on the door every start.
🏇 The Valley @ Caulfield R6 1600m – Group 2 Msc Signs Stutt Stakes
📝 Race Overview: A quality Group 2 for the three-year-olds over a mile, and the first of the feature races on the Sunday card. Several runners have been building towards this through their spring campaigns, and the step to 1600m will sort out who stays and who doesn’t. A race that often produces a future star.
🔥 Best Bet: LARA ANTIPOVA 💰 Odds: ~$2.60 ⚡ Five wins from six starts is a simply outstanding record, and this filly has done nothing wrong. She’s won her past two starts this preparation including a dominant victory in a fourteen-runner field over 1400m at Flemington two weeks ago. She gets a 2kg weight advantage as a filly and draws barrier four, which should give Zac Lloyd every chance to find the right spot. The step to 1600m is the only question, but her class should carry her through.
💎 Best Value: SOMETHINGS BURNIN’ 💰 Odds: ~$6 💥 Has been competitive in strong company this preparation with a win and two placings from three runs at 1400m at Flemington. Fourth-up now and the step to 1600m looks the right move, with Damien Lane riding for the Chris Waller stable. His career record of one win, one second and two thirds from five starts shows he’s always in the fight, and at $6 he’s a solid each-way play.
🏇 The Valley @ Caulfield R7 1600m – Group 2 Ladbrokes Stocks Stakes
📝 Race Overview: Another strong Group 2, this time restricted to mares over 1600m. The field of twelve has good depth and the race should be a genuine contest. Form from the Flemington and Caulfield tracks gives us a solid guide, and there are a couple of mares in flying form heading into this.
🔥 Best Bet: CHANGING COLOURS 💰 Odds: ~$2.70 ⚡ Has won three consecutive races heading into this, with her form string reading 4111 across her past four runs this preparation. She won over 1600m at Sandown Lakeside three weeks ago and now tackles Group 2 company, but six wins and seven seconds from nineteen starts shows she’s been a consistent performer throughout her career. Ben Shinn retains the ride and she maps to get a good run in transit.
💎 Best Value: TOO DARN DISCREET 💰 Odds: ~$6 💥 The highest-rated runner in the field on 104, she’s second-up after running a strong second in a twelve-runner field over 1400m at Flemington. Seven wins from eighteen starts is an excellent record, and she brings a level of quality that makes her a genuine threat at Group 2 level. At $6 she’s a must-include in the each-way calculations.
🏇 The Valley @ Caulfield R8 1200m – Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes
📝 Race Overview: The feature of Sunday’s card and one of the best sprint races of the spring. A field of thirteen includes several Group 1 winners and rising stars, and the 1200m at Caulfield should produce a high-quality contest. Weight-for-age conditions mean the best horse wins on the day.
🔥 Best Bet: BEIWACHT 💰 Odds: ~$3.40 ⚡ The top-rated runner in the field on 117 and a last-start winner over 1400m at Caulfield — the same track he races on here. Only a four-year-old, he’s already banked $2.5 million and his form string of 214x8261x1 shows he’s a winner second-up. He drops back from 1400m to 1200m which should have him sharp, and Nash Rawiller knows him well. The class runner in the race.
💎 Best Value: OLIVEANOTHERDAY 💰 Odds: ~$5.50 💥 Six wins from nine starts at a 67% strike rate is electric form. He won four consecutive races during his last preparation and while his past two runs have produced a first and a fifth, the third-up profile looks ideal. His form through the grades has been outstanding and at $5.50 he represents the best value in what is a cracking Group 1 field.
🏇 The Valley @ Caulfield R9 1440m – LR Sportsbet Testa Rossa Stakes
📝 Race Overview: A Listed race over 1440m to close the day, with an interesting mix of seasoned campaigners and progressive types. The emergency Buccleuch is the market favourite but may not gain a start, which opens the race up considerably. Proven Caulfield form will be a strong advantage here.
🔥 Best Bet: HARRY’S YACHT 💰 Odds: ~$4.40 ⚡ Eight wins from twenty-six starts and a horse who races well when conditions suit. He’s second-up after a fifth over 1100m at Caulfield four weeks ago, and the step to 1440m looks much more his go. His form through previous preparations includes a strong first-up win and consistent placings at this level, and Ben Allen takes the ride from barrier five. A horse who should appreciate the extra ground.
💎 Best Value: HOME RULE 💰 Odds: ~$17 💥 Won his last start in a sixteen-runner field over 1400m at Caulfield — the same course he races on here. At nine years old he’s not getting any younger, but ten wins from forty-two starts shows he’s a horse who finds a way when things fall right. Third-up now with a win and a second from his past two starts, he’s clearly in good order. At $17 he’s an overlay for a horse with course-and-distance form on his side.
