The spring carnival steps up another gear this Saturday with a pair of quality metropolitan cards at Randwick and Caulfield. Both tracks are loaded with black-type action and the return of some of the country’s best gallopers, and we’re looking to keep the momentum rolling after a strong weekend last time out.
At Caulfield, the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m headlines a stacked card that also features the Group 1 Underwood Stakes over 1800m and the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes over 2000m. The quality across the final four races is outstanding, and with the spring campaigns kicking into gear, there’s plenty of form to unpack.
Over at Randwick, the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes for three-year-old fillies and the Group 2 Shorts over 1100m are the races to watch. The Hill card also features the Group 2 Sunrise Stakes at the mile and a competitive BM88 sprint to close out proceedings.
We’ve done the form across both meetings and have narrowed down our best bets and value plays for all eight races. Let’s get into it.
๐ Caulfield R7 1800m โ Group 1 Henley Homes Underwood Stakes
๐ Race Overview: A small but select Group 1 field over 1800m with several horses resuming for their spring campaigns. With Aeliana scratched, the race shapes as a genuine contest between the proven weight-for-age performers. The tempo should be genuine with Birdman and Lindermann likely to be prominent.
๐ฅ Best Bet: COSMIC CRUSADER ๐ฐ Odds: ~$2.40 โก Outstanding record of ten wins from twenty starts with a form string of 133112×113. He won two of his first three starts this preparation and the third last start is no disgrace in strong company. William Pike is a significant booking and at $2.40 he has the form and class to take this Group 1 out.
๐ Best Value: BIRDMAN๐ฐ Odds: ~$4.80 ๐ฅ Six wins from twenty-four starts with a form string of 8x411521x6 โ his previous preparation yielded three wins and a second from six starts. He resumed with a sixth last start and is expected to improve sharply second-up, as his record through a campaign suggests. At around the $5 mark in a Group 1 with just eight runners, he offers genuine each-way value.
๐ Caulfield R8 2000m โ Group 3 Tobin Brothers Naturalism Stakes
๐ Race Overview: A wide-open staying contest at 2000m with a quality field of middle-distance gallopers stepping out for their spring campaigns. Several runners are resuming or second-up, and the 2000m will sort out those ready to perform. Expect a genuine tempo with enough pace in the race.
๐ฅ Best Bet: ZAHRANN ๐ฐ Odds: ~$3.70 โก Lightly raced five-year-old with three wins from just nine starts โ form of 11217x53x4 shows genuine ability. He gets in with only 55kg from barrier seven and the Ciaron Maher stable has targeted this race with Ethan Brown aboard. At the price he represents the best-value favourite in a wide-open Group 3 where the class runners are carrying more weight.
๐ Best Value: SAINT GEORGE ๐ฐ Odds: ~$5 ๐ฅ Six wins from twenty-one starts with a form string of 226114×411 that shows two wins from his last three starts this preparation. He’s hitting form at the right time of the season and handles the 2000m trip well. Mark Zahra is in the saddle for the Ciaron Maher yard, and at $5 he looks over the odds in a competitive Group 3.
๐ Caulfield R9 1400m โ Group 1 Sportsbet Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
๐ Race Overview: The feature race of the day and a cracking Group 1 handicap over 1400m. A quality field of sprinter-milers with varied racing patterns should produce a strong tempo. The wide draw will be a factor and those that can find a position early without doing too much work will have the advantage.
๐ฅ Best Bet: LADY SHENANDOAH ๐ฐ Odds: ~$4.80 โก Classy five-year-old mare with five wins and four placings from sixteen starts โ her form of 472x3342x4 includes consistent placings when tested at the highest level. Barrier one is a huge advantage in a big Group 1 field over 1400m, and Craig Williams knows her well. Scratched from a Randwick engagement to run here, which suggests the stable has this race circled.
๐ Best Value: REGAL AWARD ๐ฐ Odds: ~$7 ๐ฅ Lightly raced four-year-old with three wins from eleven starts and a form string of 412x73517x. He showed his best form third-up last preparation when winning, and gets in with just 52.5kg โ the lightest weight in the field. Luke Neindorf is aboard for the Peter and Paul Stokes yard, and at $7 in a competitive Group 1, the weight advantage alone makes him worth an each-way interest.
๐ Caulfield R10 1400m โ IVE Handicap (Bm84)
๐ Race Overview: A competitive BM84 to close the Caulfield card over 1400m. Several emerging types clash with seasoned campaigners, and with multiple emergencies likely to gain starts after scratchings, the final field may shift. Tempo should be solid with enough speed drawn wide.
๐ฅ Best Bet: FUNDAMENTAL NATURE ๐ฐ Odds: ~$3.70 โก Promising four-year-old mare with three wins from six starts โ form of 1138×13 shows she won first-up this preparation before a solid third last start stepping up in grade. Third-up here over 1400m, she looks set to peak at the right time. At the price she shapes as the most reliable runner in a competitive BM84.
๐ Best Value: STEALTH OF NIGHT ๐ฐ Odds: ~$5 ๐ฅ Consistent mare with four wins and four placings from ten starts โ form of 1x21123x82 reads well for this grade. She improved sharply last start with a second after an eighth on resuming, and gets first-time blinkers here which is an interesting gear change. Her last preparation included two wins and two placings from four starts โ she’s proven at this level and maps to be competitive at $5.
๐ Randwick R7 1400m โ Group 2 Grant Burge Tea Rose Stakes
๐ Race Overview: A quality three-year-old fillies race that often shapes the spring for the classic generation. A small but select field with several promising types stepping up to Group 2 level for the first time. The 1400m trip will be the key โ who can handle the step up in distance and class?
๐ฅ Best Bet: CHILLY GIRL ๐ฐ Odds: ~$3.30 โก Two wins from three career starts โ form of 1×12 is outstanding. She won first-up this preparation and then finished a close second last start stepping up in grade. Third-up here and with that progressive form, the step to Group 2 level looks well within her reach. Tim Clark in the saddle from barrier two is a strong combination.
๐ Best Value: BANGKOK HOTTIE ๐ฐ Odds: ~$4.80 ๐ฅ Three wins from six starts with a form string of 511×321 that shows steady improvement this preparation โ third, then second, then a win last start. She’s in peak form heading into this and the David Payne stable targets these fillies’ features well. Kerrin McEvoy from barrier six adds experience to an in-form filly.
๐ Randwick R8 1600m โ Group 2 Seven Sunrise Stakes
๐ Race Overview: A small but high-quality field for this Group 2 mile event, reduced by scratchings. The market suggests this is close to a one-horse race with Autumn Glow dominant at the top of betting, but races still need to be run and Group 2 level is never a formality.
๐ฅ Best Bet: AUTUMN GLOW ๐ฐ Odds: ~$1.15 โก Simply outstanding โ twelve wins from thirteen starts with a form string of 111x1113x1 that speaks for itself. The dominant mare in Australian racing right now, resuming here under James McDonald. Even at the prohibitive price, she’s the clear best bet โ the question is not whether she wins, but by how far.
๐ Best Value: GRINGOTTS ๐ฐ Odds: ~$9 ๐ฅ Twelve wins from thirty starts and a proven performer at the highest level โ his form of 2110x924x3 includes some strong efforts. He won’t beat Autumn Glow, but at $9 he’s the each-way play in a race where the place dividend could be generous if one of the shorter-priced runners underperforms. Nash Rawiller knows him well.
๐ Randwick R9 1100m โ Group 2 Yarraman Park Shorts
๐ Race Overview: A strong sprint at 1100m that draws some of the best short-course gallopers in the land. Several proven Group performers returning for their spring campaigns make this a cracking race to assess. The speed map should produce a genuine tempo with enough pace to ensure a true run.
๐ฅ Best Bet: HEADWALL ๐ฐ Odds: ~$3.40 โก Seven wins from nineteen starts with a form string of 1x4232x1x2 that shows remarkable consistency โ rarely out of the placings. He’s second-up here after a solid second last start and his record of improving with a run under the belt is well established. Barrier five gives Zac Lloyd a nice position to settle, and at the top of the market he looks the one to beat.
๐ Best Value: NINJA ๐ฐ Odds: ~$4.80 ๐ฅ Five wins from nine starts is an elite strike rate, and his form of 11x31215x1 includes a win fresh last start. He’s second-up here and the pattern of improvement through a preparation is clear โ he won second-up last prep as well. Tom Berry is in the saddle from barrier nine for the Mark Freedman stable.
๐ Randwick R10 1100m โ Nick Moraitis Trophy (Bm88)
๐ Race Overview: A competitive BM88 sprint to close the Randwick card. With scratchings reducing the field, there’s still plenty of depth and a few emerging sprinters looking to make their mark. The 1100m trip should produce a solid tempo from the outset.
๐ฅ Best Bet: ICE KOOL ๐ฐ Odds: ~$3.80 โก Four wins from six starts is an impressive strike rate โ form of 117×114 shows he’s rarely beaten. He won his first two starts this preparation before a fourth last time, and the drop back to 1100m at Randwick looks ideal for a bounce-back run. At the price, he looks well placed to handle BM88 grade.
๐ Best Value: GOLDEN STRAAND ๐ฐ Odds: ~$4 ๐ฅ Five wins from eleven starts with a form string of 64115x113x that includes two wins from three starts last preparation. Resumes after a spell and his overall record of five wins from eleven starts suggests he’s well above this grade. At $4 he represents strong value in a BM88 sprint where the favourite may be vulnerable.
